Our Reimagined Day Space is Now Open!

Listening House of St. Paul has constructed and moved into a space that innovates day shelter services. As Minnesotans navigate hard times, we offer free access to restrooms, showers, lockers, mailboxes, workspace, and a listening ear while mingling at our coffee and food bars.

Project Inspiration

Life interruptions happen: Job loss, illness, death, and unfortunate events are parts of life that put people at risk. Yet for decades, we said no to widespread support programs that keep people out of poverty. We then doubled down, creating stereotypes and assumptions around poverty that centered on shame and blame. All the while, housing and inflation continued to rise. The result? A tipping point of mass poverty and endemic homelessness that overwhelms our states, hospitals, schools, and police.

We saw a different way.

The Listening House Solution

We see poverty as social and civil justice issues.

And those in hard times need resources — not shame or blame. Our solution is simple and practical: Radical hospitality. With no fee to enter, no background check, no documents, and no criteria, everyone is welcome. Kindness, respect, and safety are the only rules.

What Homeless Day Shelter Innovation means for St. Paul

Connecting those in deep poverty to housing, health care, and development opportunities is critical for bridging out of homelessness. These high-level items remain out of reach if people aren’t able to meet their immediate needs like food, bathrooms, and safety. In homelessness, privacy is rare, security and sleep are haphazard, and hope and dignity go out the window. Moving out of poverty means first finding a way to manage everyday life. Listening House’s day-time center is intended to welcome the community with open arms and provide the resources necessary to break the cycle of despair.
